A dead outlet can stop a home office, kitchen appliance, retail display, or critical piece of equipment without warning. Reset nearby GFCI outlets
Ground-fault circuit interrupter outlets, commonly called GFCIs, are designed to shut off power quickly when they detect an electrical fault. They are commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, basements, outdoor areas, and utility spaces. One GFCI can protect other standard outlets farther along the circuit, so the dead outlet may not have reset buttons of its own.
Look for outlets with TEST and RESET buttons in nearby rooms, on the same floor, in the garage, and outdoors. Press RESET firmly on each GFCI outlet you find. If a GFCI will not reset, make sure the breaker is on first. A GFCI that still will not reset may have failed, may not be receiving power, or may be detecting a fault on the circuit.
Do not replace a GFCI with a standard outlet simply because it keeps tripping. That device is there to protect people from electric shock in areas where moisture is present. The reason for repeated tripping needs to be found and corrected.
Rule out equipment and overload problems
Sometimes the outlet is fine and the plugged-in item is the fault. Unplug everything from the dead outlet and other outlets on the same circuit. Reset the breaker or GFCI once, then test the outlet using a simple lamp or an outlet tester.
If the outlet works after equipment is unplugged, reconnect devices one at a time. The item that causes the circuit to trip may be damaged or may simply draw too much power for that circuit. Keep moisture away from indoor outlets, and make sure outdoor receptacles have suitable weather protection.
Pay attention to patterns. If lights dim when an appliance starts, plugs feel loose, breakers trip more often, or certain outlets fail repeatedly, do not treat each incident as separate. Those are useful clues for an electrician and may point to an overloaded circuit or aging electrical components.
